Mystory@Rachna: How I chose my course and career
Decisions are the hardest to make, but once you tread on the right path, there is no looking back! After my Class 12 examinations, I completed my course in Interior Designing from Birla Institute of Liberal Arts and Management Sciences(BILAMS), Kolkata. Since my parents needed me back at home, I returned there armed with the determination to make my mark in this line. It was something I loved and creating spaces that people would spend their time admiring made me feel fabulous! Eventually my mother convinced me to complete my graduation and then I spent the next few years of life working as a freelancer; designing spaces and helping my father with his business as well as taking tuitions at home.
Soon marriage happened and I started working as a teacher and that is when I completed the Cambridge International Diploma for Teachers and Trainers(CIDTT). Working as an educationist was something that was in my genes and which I knew would eventually surface. After my son was born I completed a diploma in Psychological Counselling, took the Teaching Knowledge Test, finished my diploma in HR and Public Relations and did many workshops that would further hone my skills as a teacher. All the while, I kept on teaching, first as a part-time educator and later took full time employment.
Today I head a preschool in Pune and was blessed to receive the "Excellence in English Language Teaching (West Zone) award by NTDV and Education World. I know my journey has just begun and I have a long way to go and a better opportunity to change lives in the profession I have chosen. Children keep my stress away and I would never change this for anything else in the world. About designing, well, that has taken a back seat for a while, but I will go on that road again when my son is a little older. For now, I am content doing up my own home!
I was always in two minds whether to take up designing or teaching. Coming from a home full of educators, in the beginning I actually wanted to run away from children...Well, till I had my own son!
