Coronavirus Outbreak: Manipur University creates hand sanitisers

In the wake of coronavirus pandemic, there has been an unexpected upsurge in the demand of hand sanitizers. To tackle this, many universities have been contributing by making their own sanitizers. Similarly, to meet this demand, the chemistry department of Manipur University has produced 500 bottles of ethyl alcohol-based hand sanitizers. According to Prof Okram Mukherjee, head of the department, this number of bottles of sanitizers could be produced with the help of the passionate research scholars of the department. He further stated that the department made 200 bottles of hand sanitizers, weighing 200 ml each. To make the sanitiser in the laboratory, ethyl alcohol (80 to 90 per cent), hydrogen peroxide, glycerol, and distilled water were used.

On March 19, 200 plastic bottles were procured from a local company in the first phase. He further stated that the sanitizers were distributed among the Manipur University community. On Saturday, approximately 300 bottles of sanitizers were produced and the bottles would be distributed among local people if they approached the university. He also stated that the university was in a position to produce another 1,000 bottles. He stated that the product didn’t have any side-effects. He said that some bottles of hand sanitizers would be delivered to the All India Radio station as their employees had requested for sanitizers.

Coronavirus outbreak is frightening everyone and people are stocking all the essential things such as sanitizers, masks etc. On account of coronavirus pandemic, Janta curfew was announced in India asking people to stay at home.
