Engineering Students Might Get a Chance To Study at IIT
In a welcome proposal, students fairing well in at their engineering colleges will be given an opportunity to study at IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology). They will be able to complete their undergraduate engineering programme and also earn the coveted Ph.D from the This reform was proposed by a panel, set up by the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry under former energy commission chairman Mr. Anil Kakodkar. The panel also suggested IITs to select 2500 brilliant third-year students at different engineering colleges and give them a chance to study at the institutes.
According to the blueprint of the proposal, the students will be allowed to complete their B.Tech at the IITs and then also pursue a Ph.D. at the prestigious engineering institutes. One of the panel experts said that if the proposal is materialized, hundreds of students will be able to live their dreams. The report was presented before HRD Minister Kapil Sibal last week.
On the flip side, certain IIT members are not sure about the success of the proposal as IITs would not be able to absorb the additional students. They are also of the opinion that the proposed move might prove to be a burden for both the faculty members as well as the infrastructure.
The panel recommended the HRD to increase the annual fee for the institutes from Rs 50,000 a year to Rs 2-2.5 lakh per year. Indian Institutes of Technology had already increased intake of doctoral students and their output of PhDs have also risen to around 1000 every year.
