All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is experiencing a steep slump in the number of applications for new colleges. Applications received for the academic year 2012-13 are much lower than previous years.

For 2012, AICTE has received a total of 400 applications for new institutes across the country for various disciplines such as technology, engineering, management, architecture, applied art, computer application and hotel management.

According to the senior official of AICTE, they have even extended the deadline for submitting proposals to start new institutes for the year 2012. He added that current economic depression could be one of the big reasons for such trend.

This year AICTE has also lowered the entry bar because engineering seats have been lying vacant every year.
