Hans Raj College is well known for several reasons. Located in north campus, it has an impressive infrastructure, including a huge playground and a shooting range. Academically, too, it has carved a niche for itself, especially in science and commerce.

Infrastructure

Besides many classrooms and playgrounds, there is a sports complex, a badminton hall, an air-conditioned electronic shooting range, well-equipped laboratories, a tutorial block, a spacious library, a big administrative block, a hostel for nearly 200 students, a canteen, a well-furnished air-conditioned seminar room with audiovisual facilities and residential flats for teaching as well as non-teaching staff.

Ok, so you might be telling yourself, did Shah Rukh Khan actually sit and eat here? It’s a bit hard to actually picture Bollywood's favourite poster boy in this place, however, as it is not very happening where maintenance is concerned. The Nescafe stall bang opposite attracts bigger crowds even though it has a few chairs under the open skies.

Courses: BA (hons) in economics, English, Hindi, maths, Sanskrit, history; BCom (hons); BA programme; BSc (hons) in botany, zoology, computer science, electronics, physics, chemistry, maths and BSc (pass) in applied sciences, life sciences and physical sciences.

Societies: The college has several societies for activities like choreography, debating and drama. The dramatics society is considered a team to be reckoned with, though some argue that it lost some sheen after the college’s Hindi and English dramatics clubs were merged some time ago. “We do a variety of plays – street plays and stage shows – based on social issues like climate change and child rights and also for pure entertainment,” says Akanksha Nanda, a third-year history honours student, who is the society treasurer.

Famous alumni: Shah Rukh Khan, Navin Jindal, Randeep Hooda, and Vinod Dua.

Found on campus: Vrinda Sarda, a second-year student of physics honours, is happy to be in Hans Raj as its science faculty is good and the diverse mix of students livens up things. “We not only focus on studies but also take part in activities for social causes through participation in the NSS. But it would be great if our library is made fully computerised so that I don’t have to spend a long time scouting for books I wish to borrow. Moreover, like Hindu (College), we should also get an air-conditioned library,” she says.

Hangouts: Hans Raj has an enviable location as compared to other north campus colleges. Though located at some distance from the main campus, its proximity to Kamla Nagar makes it a happening place as the market is home to numerous eating joints, which draw students from all over the sprawling university area. Now, students are thrilled about the new entrant – KFC, which is expected to come up soon in Kamla Nagar

The college has a famous Lover’s Point (LP) where students from others colleges, too, spend time.
