UGC seeks 1.8Lakh crore in 12th five-year plan for improvement in higher education

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sought Rs 1, 84,784 crore in the 12th Five-year Plan with ambitious plans for improvement of higher education in the country.

In the 12th five year plan, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has sought Rs 1, 84,784 crores. It has made a pilot project to improve the higher education in the country. UGC chairman professor Ved Prakash said that this pilot project includes new initiatives chalked out by the UGC.

In the 11th Five-year Plan, UGC had received Rs 46,663 crore towards improvement of higher education. He added that existing schemes and programmes will be updated. The 11th Five-year Plan had envisioned setting up of 374 model colleges across the country and it had achieved success in setting up only 78 such model colleges.

The new Five-year Plan that will come into effect on April 1, 2012, also proposes to give more funds to state universities. He also said that we will try to bridge the gap between the central and state universities in terms of funds.
