Sabyasachi Mishra, is an engineering graduate from Baleshwar, Orissa. He wishes to get into IIM Calcutta. He left his job and began a startup and along with this, he prepared for his CAT 2020 exam. Q. Was this your first CAT attempt? Were you expecting this score?
A. No, this was my second CAT attempt. I was expecting a 100 percentile this time but I accepted 99.90 score too. I think I could have got the 100 percentile if I had not lost 24 marks for a simple mistake.
Q. What was your preparation strategy?
A. My CAT preparation strategy was simply solving the doubts of my students who enrolled in my institute. Helping them and clearing their doubts helped me clear my own. That helped me clear my concepts and strengthen the basics. I feel understanding the concepts thoroughly is very important to score well in the CAT exam. I believe if you are clear with the concepts and understand them, then you can crack CAT easily.
Q. How many mock tests did you attempt?
A. I attempted 4-5 mock tests.
Q. What was your exam day strategy?
A. I was a little afraid of VARC. My target was a score of 98-99 in VARC section. So I looked for easier Reading Comprehension passages. I solved three RC questions easily and left one, which made me more confident. For the VA part, I solved those questions which did not have a negative. For DILR, I made sure I find the sets which suit my preference. QA was the easiest for me. I solved the easier questions in round one and then the difficult ones.

Q. Do you think it is necessary to join a coaching institute for CAT preparation?
A. I wouldn’t say it is compulsory. If you work hard enough, then you will able to crack CAT even without a coaching institute. If one understands the concepts thoroughly, they would not need the coaching. Somebody who sincerely and dedicatedly studies then he/she can easily crack CAT and score well.
Q. Which are the IIMs or MBA colleges that you are targeting?
A. I always want to get into IIM Calcutta. I love the college.
Q. How did you deal with CAT prep stress?
A. Gaming helped me with the CAT prep stress.
Q. Any tips for future CAT aspirants?
A. Focus more on concepts more than the mock tests. I would say that mocks do not matter much. What you learn from the mock tests is what matters. If you made a hundred mistakes in the mocks, focus on what should you do to not make the same mistakes in the future. They should analyse their mistakes thoroughly and make sure they do not make it again. Also, do not stress about mock tests.
Q. What is your plan after completing MBA?
A. Actually, I am inspired by Elon Musk. I wanted to be a Civil Service aspirant but when I got to know about Elon Musk and his work towards changing the world I was so inspired by him. Then I thought that being a civil servant would change the country but I have to think bigger. So I wanted to change the future of humanity and mankind. Then I decided to embark upon my entrepreneurial journey and started my coaching institute Crackmba.in which I plan on doing even after MBA.

A: Yes, CAT can be cracked in the first attempt provided that you prepare well. To score well in CAT one must start preparing early and strengthen the fundamentals and basics. Have an in-depth understanding of the concepts. Work on your weaker areas but at the same time capitalize on your strengths.
Q: I scored 80 percentile in CAT. Is it a good score?
A: Yes, it is considered an above-average score in CAT. Candidates who score 80 percentile can get into good colleges such as BITS Pilani, IIM Shillong, etc.
Q: I got 90 percentile in CAT. Will I get a call from IIM-K?
A: Yes, 90 percentile is a good score. For General category candidates, the overall qualifying CAT 2020 cut-off is 85 percentile, for NC/OBC/EWS it is 75 percentile, for SC, it is 65 percentile and for ST/PwD, it is 55 percentile.
Q: Is the CAT exam very difficult?
A: Generally, CAT exam has a moderate difficulty level. Scoring well in the exam depends on the individual's preparation. If you think that the exam will be difficult, you must start preparing early. Keep practicing different types of questions, easy and difficult. Attempt an ample number of mock tests and solve many sample papers. If prepared well you can definitely score well in CAT.
Q: Is it important to take coaching to prepare for CAT?
A: No it is not absolutely necessary. It completely depends on an individual decision. If you work hard enough, one can score well in CAT even without coaching. One must understand the concepts deeply and practice well.
Q: I am a non-IITian, can I get into IIM?
A: Yes, if you have a good academic score and you score well in CAT, you can definitely get into IIMs.
Q: Can I prepare for CAT while working?
A: Yes, many toppers scored 100 percentile while working full time and many have also made it into the top IIMs. Good preparation strategy can fetch you a good score.
Q: How much time should I devote to prepare for CAT?
A: One must start preparing for CAT at least a year before. However, many CAT applicants have cracked the exam by preparing for only six or four months. Therefore, it depends on the individual that in how many months can they prepare for CAT basis their strengths and weaknesses.
Q: How much time should I give to prepare for CAT in a day?
A: One must at least give two to three hours to practice and learning because CAT is all about practice.
