Nine medical colleges, two AIIMS approved for Jammu and Kashmir: Cabinet Ministry

Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, on Thursday performed bhoomi poojan ceremony of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jammu. The minister informed that Jammu and Kashmir has been sanctioned two AIIMS – one each in Jammu and Kashmir regions. In addition to the two AIIMs, nine medical colleges have also been allocated in Jammu and Kashmir, the minister stated in an official press release.

According to his statement, the new work culture of the government of working away from vote bank politics has immensely helped the people of Jammu and Kashmir. In January 2019, the Union Government had accepted the proposal for developing an AIIMS in Jammu at Vijaypur, District Samba under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). The foundation stone of AIIMS, Jammu was laid by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on February 3 last year.

The project is likely to cost Rs 1661 crores and it is being accomplished by CPWD. It is likely to be finished in 30 months by August 2022. Once finished, AIIMS Jammu would be a 750-bed hospital with super-specialty branches. It shall also consist of a medical college and a nursing college. It is slated to be a green building including the state of the art equipment and technology.

This is one of the steps taken to revive after a period of radicalism and terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. Since the abolition of Article 370, the government has been taking several measures to benefit the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from this, many more development projects have been given the green signal by the union government.
