80% attendance mandatory for Class X & XII students: GSEB
The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB), popularly known as GSEB or Gujarat Board has recently issued a notification governing new attendance rules for students. As per the new rules, Gujarat Board has made 80% attendance compulsory for Class 10th and 12th students during the academic year, June 15 to February 15. The new attendance rules have left many students startled.
As per the old rules, if any student did not fulfill attendance criteria they could take their Gujarat board exams privately. However, the new rules have made at least 65% attendance compulsory for students to take the exams as private students. However, the GSEB chairman has been empowered to relax attendance criteria by maximum 15% in exceptional cases such as prolonged illness of a student, death of a parent or participation in NCC/ NSS camps. Apart from these, if a student requires flexibility in attendance, the parents have to make a representation to the school principal who will further forward it to GSEB officials.
As per the data from Gujarat board, nearly one lakh students take Class 10th and 12th board exams as private students every year.
It may be noted that the board’s decision to make 80% attendance mandatory for students is its second major decision this year. In June 2018, the board had also notified major changes to the rules of promoting students to higher classes.
GSEB board exam 2019 dates for Class 10th and 12th have not been announced yet. However, last year GSEB SSC exams for Class 10th were conducted from March 12 – 23. On the other hand, Class 12th board exams were held from March 12 – 28, 2018.
GSEB Class 12th results 2018 were declared on May 10 (for Science stream) and May 31 (for Arts and Commerce streams). Also, GSEB Class 10th results were released by the board on May 28, 2018.
