Odisha School Timing Changed: Due to the prevailing heatwave conditions across Odisha, the state government has directed all government and private schools to shift to morning classes starting April 2, 2025. The announcement was made by Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, who also confirmed that ongoing school exams will conclude by March 27, 2025.
In addition to schools, Anganwadi centers will also operate in morning hours from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM to ensure the safety of young children during the extreme summer heat.
Rising Temperatures in Odisha
Odisha is experiencing higher-than-usual temperatures, with several districts already facing heatwave conditions. The worst-affected areas include:
- Boudh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Bolangir, and Sundargarh, where heatwaves have been reported.
- Coastal regions, including Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, are witnessing high humidity levels, making conditions more unbearable.
To tackle the crisis, district collectors have been given full authority to implement necessary precautions without waiting for government approval.
Government's Heatwave Response Plan
Minister Suresh Pujari highlighted that in the last 10 years, over 330 people have lost their lives due to sunstroke. The government has now taken steps to prevent further casualties:
- Drinking water facilities and shaded rest spots will be set up along busy roads.
- The Panchayati Raj Department has allocated ₹300 crore for installing new tube wells in areas facing drinking water shortages. More funds may be provided if required.
Odisha Weather Update
The temperature in Bolangir town hit 41.1°C, making it the hottest place in Odisha in the past 24 hours. Other locations recorded:
- Jharsuguda: 40.8°C
- Titlagarh: 40.5°C
- Sundargarh: 40.1°C
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for various districts:
- Orange Alert (Thunderstorms & Lightning Expected): Bhadrak, Jharsuguda, Keonjhargarh, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Sundargarh.
- Yellow Alert (Possibility of Heavy Winds & Rainfall): Sambalpur, Deogarh, Boudh, Angul, Jajpur.
The Odisha government has urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure, and follow safety measures to combat the heatwave. Schools, parents, and students are advised to stay updated with further government directives.
