Calicut University Admission 2021: Calicut University has begun the CU Admission 2021 process for various Undergraduate, integrated PG courses. This year, Calicut University has brought one new and unique condition in front of the students enrolling for various programmes offered at the University. Calicut University has now made it mandatory for the students to submit a declaration form; i.e. Anti-Dowry Declaration form in order to get admission to the UG/PG courses that are offered by the varsity.

As per reports, in the last three years, due to dowry-related harassment, 34 women in Kerala have lost their lives and no one has been convicted in these cases so far. However, now the government has come forward to stop this dowry-related harassment and is actively taking initiatives to stop this practice.

After interventions from various groups including a symbolic protest by Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, the Vice-Chancellor of Calicut University has released a circular as per which students enrolling into the colleges under Calicut University will now have to sign a declaration form stating that they will not give, ask for or accept dowry during their marriage, as reported by TimesNow.

The circular has also clarified that all stakeholders should not be indirectly involved in taking dowry or encouraging dowry from anyone. Hence, during the time of their admission, all students will have to sign an undertaking that clearly states that they would not demand dowry directly or indirectly from the parent or guardian of the bride.

It must be noted that in case a student breaks the rule, their admission will be cancelled. Also, the University might take other actions such as not granting the degree to the respective student or withdrawal of the degree from the student. The role is not only applicable to the student, but also to their parents or guardians, and they too will have to sign the undertaking in order to let their wards have admission to Calicut University.

The Calicut University undertaking mentions, "dowry shall have the same meaning as in the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961." The Dowry Prohibition Act that was passed in 1961 by the Parliament, makes it illegal for any person to take dowry. This act is applicable to people of all religions in India and it makes giving or receiving dowry illegal in the country.
