The Faculty of Music and Fine Arts of Delhi University (DU) and the Singapore Fine Arts Society (SIFAS) inked a pact recently. According to the reports, the two entities signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a “cultural, academic and research collaboration agreement in Indian music”. Various media reports suggest that during a two-day international webinar, the two signed the MoU, “Traditional Music in Different Cultures: Opportunities and Challenges in the Changing Global Scenario”, hosted by the Delhi University’s Department of Music on February 25 and 26.

An official statement released regarding the signing of the pact reads, “The MoU will expand the cultural and institutional footprint of both the prestigious musical institutions with a rich historical background – SIFAS commencing its glorious music journey in 1949, and the Department of Music taking its first step towards musical excellence in 1960.”

It further adds, “The teachers and students of SIFAS will get an opportunity to perform at the University of Delhi, and vice versa,” it said. “The MoU would also enable the faculty to spread its footprint in South East Asia in collaboration with SIFAS and give the much needed boost to Indian music and fine arts.”

According to DU’s acting vice-chancellor P C Joshi, the Delhi University also became the first institution in the country to award “digital degrees” to its 1,78,719 students during its 97th annual convocation on February 27, 2021. The varsity conducted the convocation ceremony in a hybrid manner (a mix of both online and offline mode) considering the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation.
