The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has invited people of Chennai to provide details of flooded roads in their neighbourhood after the city was lashed by heavy rains. Residents have already started reporting incidents of waterlogging from various locations on a flood mapping platform, Urban Risk Map. The data from the app, which was originally developed by Urban Risk Lab of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is being collated by Balaji Narasimhan from the Civil Engineering Department, IIT Madras.

Narasimhan in a statement said the data provided by the people on flooding would help the Chennai corporation improve the design of roads and stormwater drains and their maintenance. He said once people logged in to the data, it would act as an archive and would be used for improving the systems.
