The Punjabi University has announced that it has decided to set up a center for the revival of ecology in the state at its campus in Patiala. Vice-chancellor Professor Arvind made the announcement on World Environment Day on Saturday. He said the centre aims at multi-institutional and multi-dimensional research so that required efforts can be made to preserve the ecosystem in Punjab.

“The centre will have a component of rural entrepreneurship, which will be responsible for the eco-restoration of Punjab’s Malwa belt,” he said.

On the occasion, the department of zoology and environmental sciences organised a webinar on the theme “Ecosystem Restoration: Reimagine, Recreate and Restore”.

Prof Mewa Singh of the University of Mysore was the keynote speaker. He stressed on the importance of conservation in the Indian context, especially the management of forest and urban wildlife species.

Earlier, Punjabi University has managed to collect pending semester fees from students, who have to appear in exams. Earlier, in a strong-worded letter, Dean (Academic Affairs) had directed department heads to withhold the internal assessment marks of students, who failed to pay their semester fee. He also asked them to ensure that these students be barred from appearing in ongoing exams. The Punjabi University Dean (Academic Affairs), Dr BS Sandhu, said the office received information about 141 students of various departments who had failed to deposit their semester fee. These students had managed to download their exam slips on mere submission of examination fee, he added.
