The course will be offered by trained and experienced sketch artists who already have hands-on experience in the job.

Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is all set to offer a full-fledged course in police-related work. While the Union Budget 2020 has announced the need to set up a National Police University, to recruit eligible and trained youth for police-related work, Savitribai Phule Pune University has already decided to shook hands with the Centre for Police Research, Pashan, to offer multiple courses in police-related work. As a starter, SPPU will start the enrolment process for a short-term course in sketching. The course will enroll those who are interested in joining the police force as a sketch artist.

A police sketch artist works with the police department and makes sketches of culprits as per the feature details and instructions provided by victims and eye-witnesses. According to the Vice-Chancellor Nitin Karmalkar, discussion on starting a course on police-related work took place in the recent meeting of the academic council. He also added that the Centre for Police Research approached the university quite a while back, and to begin with they are planning to arrange a short-term course in sketching for police work.

The VC further stated that there is a shortage of sketch artists and whenever CCTVs are not available at the place of incidence, sketch artists play a vital role in catching the culprit.

SPPU is hoping that the course will attract many aspirants. However, the university is yet to sign a formal MoU with the Centre for Police Research. The course will be offered by trained and experienced sketch artists who already have hands-on experience in the job. The course will be of a few weeks and a joint diploma certificate will be provided to the students at the end.
