University of Kashmir selected to host G20 events in 2023

The University of Kashmir has been listed as one of the 15 academic institutions in the country to represent the nation in hosting the prestigious Youth-20 events during India’s Presidency of the Group-20 in 2023.

It may be recalled that in 1990 when militancy was at its peak in the Valley, then Vice-Chancellor Mushirul Haq was kidnapped and killed. During the first decade of militancy, some sections of the faculty in the Kashmir University turned the educational institute into a ‘madrasa’.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has appealed for the active participation of educational institutions in the G20 meeting to be held in the Union Territory. Addressing the 87th meeting of the University Council of the University of Jammu at the Raj Bhavan, Sinha said, "We are moving ahead with a new resolve in the education sector. We have high expectations from the higher education council in developing a roadmap to restore the ancient glory of Jammu-Kashmir in the education sector and using knowledge to enhance its growth and development.”

An official release said that Lt Governor Sinha asked the universities and reputed educational institutions to come forward and ensure the successful conduct of the G20 event in Jammu Kashmir. The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has maintained that the Y20(Youth-20) Summit is a unique opportunity to allow the youth to provide constructive policy inputs and to utilize the platform to voice their opinions to the world audience.
