West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose has given nod for the extension of the tenure of Jadavpur University vice-chancellor Suranjan Das. Das’s name was featured on the list of 24 VCs of state-aided universities whose tenure extension came under the scanner because the government had issued the orders without the approval of then governor Jagdeep Dhankhar.

The governor is ex officio chancellor of all state-aided universities. Das was among the eight VCs who went to Raj Bhavan urging his extension.  Like the rest, he tendered his resignation and the governor extended his tenure by three months.

Meanwhile, the University official said that the three-month extension that Das got will expire on May 31, as reported by The Telegraph. On June 24, 2021, the West Bengal Education Department had extended the tenure of Das for a second time by two years or till he turned 70, whichever was earlier.

"The retirement age of VCs was increased to 70 so institutes can retain experienced academics," an official in the education department said. An official of Presidency University said "the resignation of VC Anuradha Lohia had been emailed to Raj Bhavan. The university is awaiting the governor’s response."
