10 AI Labs to be Established in Thiruvananthapuram Colleges

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, recently announced the establishment of AI labs in 10 Thiruvananthapuram colleges as part of the newly launched IndiaAI Mission. These labs will be operated with the technical help of a Global AI giant.

"We have got applications from 17 colleges, and as a first phase, AI labs will be allocated to 10 of them. The names are yet to be finalised," Chandrasekhar said. He said these labs are allotted under the new India AI Mission.

India aims to create a robust AI ecosystem with a projected budget of INR 10,361 crore. Additionally, INR 2,000 crore is allocated specifically to support AI startups. He further added, "The infrastructure comprising hardware, software, and skilling programs will be provided to these 10 colleges with AI labs."

He also mentioned that over the past few years, he has initiated similar programs nationwide and is now implementing them in Thiruvananthapuram. Only now I can talk about Thiruvananthapuram, as I got a chance only now. If you had asked me two years ago, how would I have spoken about Thiruvananthapuram then? Only now, I got a chance," Chandrasekhar remarked. He also stated that there's no limit to the number of AI labs being set up, promising that within the next five years, any college desiring one will receive government support to establish it.

"Innovation centers under the IndiaAI mission will harness the power of AI for our Indian digital economy and our citizens. They will develop in areas such as health, medicine discovery, agriculture, education, security, governance, language translation, among others. AI compute and AI data centers are the fundamental backbone in training AI models. Therefore, a capacity of 10,000 GPUs for AI compute will help startups in Kerala and across the country that currently lack adequate AI compute resources. Rs 2000 crores have been set aside to finance startups,” the Minister further added.
