AICTE introduces BTech Electronics VLSI Design & Technology, Diploma in IC Manufacturing

Any number of AICTE affiliated colleges/universities/technical institutions can opt for the newly launched programmes.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has introduced two new courses – BTech Electronics VLSI Design and Technology and Diploma in IC Manufacturing. Any number of AICTE affiliated colleges/universities/technical institutions can opt for the newly launched programmes, The Indian Express reported.  

The technical education regulator is hoping that these courses will provide Indian students several opportunities in domestic as well as international companies. “VLSI sector is a high-paying industry and immune to automation. It will create an environment for Semiconductor ecosystem for setting and scaling up,” AICTE said in a notice. 

These courses can be financially rewarding for students as the usual starting salaries for a fresher role in VLSI company vary between INR 10 lakh per annum and INR 20 lakh per annum, depending upon the company. The average salary in this role would be INR 14 lakh per annum. Similarly, average annual salary in multinational companies for beginners is from INR 30 to INR 80 lakh per annum. 

The curriculum for BTech in Electronics (VLSI design and technology) includes several parts such as introduction to IC design and technology, digital systems labs, semiconductor device fundamentals, analog electronics, introduction to CMOS processing, introduction to VLSI design, analog IC design, statis timing analysis, fabrication and characterisation lab, physics of electrical engineering materials. 

For diploma in IC manufacturing, the curriculum will include introduction to VLSI fabrication, semiconductor fab familiarisation, electronic devices and circuits, clean room technologies, semiconductor technology equipment maintenance, allied activities for foundry such as safety protocol for foundry, vacuum technology, the IE report added.
