The courses that have been discontinued include bachelor’s in engineering (BE) courses in civil and mechanical streams that were offered in Tamil and English medium.

Anna University has decided to stop the admission process for certain undergraduate engineering programmes due to poor enrolment from the 2023-24 academic year. An official circular read, “It is informed that the admission to the following UG (English medium and Tamil medium) degree programmes which are offered in constituent colleges of Anna University is suspended temporarily with effect from the academic year 2023-24 onwards, as approved by the 29th Academic Council meeting.”

The courses that have been discontinued include bachelor’s in engineering (BE) courses in civil and mechanical streams that were offered in Tamil and English medium. One BE in electrical and electronics engineering (EEE) course taught in English-medium has also been stopped at University College of Engineering (UCE), Thirukkuvalai, Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. Other colleges where courses have been discontinued include UCE, Arni, Tindivanam, Villipuram, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Ariyalur, Panruti, Pattukkottai, Nagercoil and Thoothukudi.

The situation was so bad that in most of the 11 colleges, there were less than 10 students in civil engineering and mechanical engineering courses last academic year. The varsity’s financial burden kept mounting due to these courses,” an official from Anna University told New Indian Express. The official said that the university will focus on adding new-age/vocational courses that can guarantee employment in the future.
