Bengaluru: Nine engineering colleges shut due to reducing demand

On one hand, the new-age technologies are shaping the world and there is more demand for IT-related subjects on another hand nearly 14 engineering colleges in Bengaluru have closed in the last five years due to decreasing demand and law admissions.

In 2021, nearly 30,000 engineering seats had no takers and out of 14 engineering colleges that closed in Karnataka, nine are from Bengaluru.

In the state, every year demand for engineering courses is decreasing resulting in more and more vacant seats, as reported by The Hans India.

In Bengaluru, most engineering colleges have more than two branches in the same area as part of their strategy to get more students under a different name but this has worked against the colleges as it resulted in increasing seats and less demand for engineering courses.

Visvesvaraya Technical University (VTU) data has revealed that in 2020-21, six engineering colleges were closed due to increased Covid infection. There are a total of 208 engineering colleges under the purview of VTU.

VTU Chancellor Karisiddappa said, "Some colleges are able to attract students despite lack of infrastructure. The Local Inquiry Committee (LIC) has recommended the closure of such colleges."

Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) fills government quota seats in government and private engineering colleges and every year more than 60,000 seats used to be available to KEA for admission but after the colleges are closing every year, the number of vacant seats is increasing.
