IITKGP student’s father demands CID probe, alleges murder

Several incidents of suicides by students of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have been reported in the past months. The recent case is of IIT Kharagpur where the semi-decomposed body a third-year BTech student from Assam, Faizan Ahmed, was found in his hostel room on October 14. His parents have moved the Calcutta High Court demanding a probe by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) or a Special Investigation Team (SIT). Selim Ahmed, father of Faizan, alleged that his son was murdered and therefore a probe by CID or a SIT is required to find out the truth. He has filed a petition before the single bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha. The bench is likely to hear the matter on Thursday.

Faizan’s mother has also written a letter to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan alleging that his son did not commit suicide, rather he was murdered. A copy of the letter has also been sent to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who had earlier requested his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee to carry out a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding the death of Faizan, who belongs to Tinsukia in Assam.
