Engineers’ Day 2025: Indian Engineers Are Building India's Future

September 15 is celebrated as India’s Engineer’s Day in honor of M Visvesvaraya, one of India’s most visionary engineers. M Visvesvaraya, the maker of modern Mysore is also India’s foremost civil engineer. His contributions were recognised by even the Govt of British India and the Indian Government. He was appointed as the knighted KCIE for his services to British India and Bharat Ratna by the Government of India in 1955. His contributions in irrigation, dams and architectural planning laid the foundation of modern India.

Coming to the present when India has developed as a global innovation hub, it is M Visvesvaraya whose contributions continue to inspire millions of engineers in India. It is because of these engineers that have made a global impact with their significant technological advancements. On this Engineers Day 2025 his legacy speaks stronger than ever as India reiterates its role in global engineering and technology.

Honoring M Visvesvaraya’s Legacy

Sir Mokshagundam Vishvevaraya, commonly known as M Visvevaraya was born in 1861. He was a civil engineer and statesman. He started his engineering career under the Government of British India where he became an assistant engineer at the Public Works Department, Bombay. In 1899, he joined the Indian Irrigation Commission where he introduced several irrigation methods. In 1909, Sir M Vishvevaraya was the Chief Engineer of the Krishna Raja Sagar Dam, Mysore. He also served as the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918 and contributed significantly to earn the title of the father of modern Mysore.

India Emerges As The World’s Powerhouse of Engineers

At present, India produces nearly 15 lakh engineers every year. Indian engineers have created a global impact with reports suggesting one-third of Silicon Valley engineers come from Indian origins. Names like Sundar Pichai (Google), Satya Nadella (Microsoft), Shantanu Narayen (Adobe) need no introduction. These Indian CEOs at top leading companies highlight Indian engineering at a global stage.

Indian Engineers Building the Future

Indian engineers continue proving their merit in the upcoming, highly skilled and demanding sectors by focusing on CSE, AI and Data Science. 

  • The Govt of India approved India’s ₹76,000 crore Semiconductor Mission (ISM) in 2021 to boost fabrication, design, and manufacturing.
  • Missions like Chandrayaan 3 and the upcoming Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme highlight India’s engineering prowess.
  • India’s focus is also shifting towards being a global EV hub. The country needs its sharpest engineering minds in automobile developments, battery technology and more.

While there is a growing imbalance between the CS and IT related branches and the core engineering branches which is evident as per the Karnataka counselling 2025. The KCET and COMEDK counselling data reflects how more than 33,000 seats remain vacant due to changing preferences that require a change in the curriculum and the specialisations being offered.

Despite the challenges, Indian engineers' contribution is widely recognised and trusted across the nation and globally. Their contribution is also recognised by PM Narendra Modi who extended his wishes through social media today. Engineer’s Day 2025 serves as a reminder and a day of appreciation for the sharpest and brightest minds of the country who help build India’s golden future.
