GATE 2027 Details Released; Know Major Changes This Year From Updated Syllabus to City Allotment
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has launched the GATE 2027 website - gate2027.iitm.ac.in. The details and major changes to be implemented this year have been announced. Check details below.
IIT Madras will hold GATE 2026, and there are several changes for this year's examination. From revisions in the syllabus of select papers to changes in the exam city allotment process, candidates appearing for GATE 2027 must familiarise themselves with the latest guidelines before filling out the application form.

Here are the major changes introduced in GATE 2027:
GATE 2027 Syllabus Revised
IIT Madras has revised the syllabus for a few GATE 2027 papers. Candidates should not rely on previous years' syllabus and instead download the latest subject-wise syllabus from the official website. The revised syllabus includes changes in topics and weightage for some papers, making it important for aspirants to align their preparation with the updated pattern.
Exam City Allotment
This year onwards, IIT Madras will notify the exam city allotment separately before the release of the admit card. Until last year, the test city was allotted via the admit card itself. However, this year the allotment will be available beforehand so that candidates get more time to plan their travel and accommodation for the exam day.

Changes in GATE Papers & New Paper Added
There are changes made to:
- Textile Engineering & Fibre Science (TF) paper.
- Changes have been made to theΒ XE, XH, XLΒ sectional paper codes.
A new GATE test paper, Robotics and Automation (RA), has been introduced
Revised List of Examination Cities
The organising institute has updated the list of examination cities and zones for GATE 2027. Some cities have been added while others have been removed or reorganised. Candidates should verify the latest city list before selecting their preferences during registration. There are no international test cities.
GATE 2027 Exam Will be Held Over 3 Weeks
Until last year, GATE was held over 2 weeks. However, this year the exam will be held in three weeks. The exam dates are:
- Week 1: February 6 & 7, 2027
- Week 2: February 13 & 14, 2027
- Week 3: February 20 & 21, 2027

GATE 2027 registration will open on August 14 and will be available till September 21.
GATE scores are accepted for admission to MTech, ME, PhD and other postgraduate programmes offered by IITs, NITs, IIITs and other participating institutes. Several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) also use GATE scores for recruitment.
Commonly asked questions
As of now, there is no update regarding syllabus change in GATE 2027. However, last year (2026) a new sectional paper has been added under Engineering Sciences, XE, which is Energy Science and GATE paper code is XE-I.
The GATE Mechanical Engineering syllabus include the following topics and chapters -
- Engineering mathematics
- Applied Mechanics and design
- Fluid mechanics and thermal science
- Materials, manufacturing, and industrial engineering
