Government allocates Rs 4,371.90 crore for 6 new NITs, to become fully functional by March 2022: HRD Ministry
The Ministry of Human Resource Development has announced that Rs 4371.90 has been sanctioned as revised cost estimates of six NITs.
Union Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ has announced that Rs 4371.90 crore has been allocated as revised cost estimates of six National Institutes of Technology.
These six NITs are located in North-East India, Delhi, and Puducherry. The four North-Eastern NITs are located in Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram.
These NITs are expected to become fully functional by March 31, 2020, the minister said. These NITs will have an overall student capacity of 6,320 students in all the six campuses.
“Government is committed to providing quality education and infrastructure improvement in educational institutions all over India and especially to the students of the North-Eastern states of the country,” the HRD Ministry said.
The government has also given permission to establish a permanent campus of Sikkim University, the minister said. Sikkim University is a central university, which is located about 56 kilometers from Gangtok. “The government has granted permission for the establishment of permanent campus of Sikkim University, at Yangyang, at a cost of Rs 986.47 crore,” the HRD ministry said.
“The government of Sikkim has allotted 300 acres of land at cost of Rs 15 crore, out of which 265.94 acres of land has already been handed over to the university. The handing over of remaining land is under process,” the Ministry added.
NITs are premier engineering colleges in India offering both undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses. There are a total of 31 NITs in India and admission to B.Tech Programmes is managed through the JoSAA counselling process, based on AIR rank secured in JEE Main. NIT offers admission to M.Tech programmes based on the score obtained in GATE exam while seat allotment is managed through CCMT (Centralized Counseling for M.Tech/M.Arch/M.Plan/M.Des).
