IIEST Shibpur cancels offline academic activities amid surge in COVID-19 cases
The institute was planning to start BTech offline classes in the ensuing even semester from January 2022.
The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) Shibpur and Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Belur, have decided to suspend offline academic activities amid rising concerns over the Omicron variant of Coronavirus.
As per a report published in The Telegraph, IIEST Shibpur, which was planning to start BTech offline classes in the ensuing even semester from January, has decided that classes till the mid semester will be held online as a section of students are not willing to come amid COVID surge.
The decision was taken following a meeting with the deans of the institute and the office bearers of the students’ senate. “We will review the situation in February-end. At this moment, it won’t be advisable to hold offline classes, given the worsening health scenario,” said dean of students’ affairs Debabrata Mazumder.
He said students who are facing internet issues can come to the campus to attend online classes from the WiFi-enabled hostels based on availability. If the situation worsens, then the students who wish to come would have to vacate hostels, said an official.
A survey was carried out by the students’ senate seeking to know how many students wanted to return to the campus, given that there has been a new surge in Covid cases and it was found that nearly 40 per cent third and fourth-year students on an average were not interested to come.
Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Belur, which had earlier decided to hold the end-semester exams in the offline mode in February and March, has decided to switch to online mode following a recent advisory of the higher education department, said Swami Ekachittananda, the principal of the college.
