DGH and IIT Bombay have teamed up to foster the development of new energy and decarbonisation technologies in India through collaborative learning and joint research.

The Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH), Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) to promote R&D in enhanced hydrocarbon recovery and geologic carbon dioxide storage. The MoU was signed in the presence of Dr. Pallavi Jain Govil, IAS, Director General of DGH, and Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay.

Prof. Vikram Vishal, Convener of the DST-National Centre of Excellence in CCUS and Department of Earth Sciences at IIT Bombay, delivered a brief presentation outlining the scope of the MoU. His presentation covered site-specific studies on carbon dioxide storage, with or without enhanced oil recovery, exploration of new geo-energy resources, development of CCS regulatory frameworks, and the demonstration of CCS principles.

Dr. Govil emphasised the urgent need for collaboration to address the major challenges confronting the upstream hydrocarbon sector, particularly as it undergoes transformation in line with energy transitions and net-zero objectives."I greatly admire the dynamic research environment at IIT Bombay, and I firmly believe that this marks the beginning of an extraordinary collaboration model that will contribute to our efforts on enhancing energy access, efficiency, sustainability, and security," she stated.

Dr. Kaustav Nag, Additional Director General (Exploration) at DGH, highlighted the organisation's vision of utilizing data and expertise to support the geoscientific community, thereby enhancing innovation and growth in the upstream hydrocarbon sector.
