IITs boycott Times Higher Education rankings
Seven IITs in Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee have boycotted the ranking for the third year, challenging THE's parameters and transparency.
Several Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), inlcuding Delhi, Roorkee, Kanpur, Mumbai, and Kharagpur, boycotted the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 for the third year in a row raising doubts over its parameters and transparency. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) retained the top spot as the highest-ranking Indian university in the 2023 edition of the THE rankings.
THE rankings 2023: India 6th most represented country
With 75 institutes featuring in THE’s 2023 ranking, India became the sixth most represented country in the list. Six Indian universities have made their rankings debut this year, with Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences the highest ranked of the newcomers, ranked at 351-400.
THE World University Rankings 2023 include 1,799 universities across 104 countries and regions. The rankings are based on 13 parameters that measure an institution’s performance across four areas: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. The University of Oxford topped the list for the seventh consecutive year, followed by Harvard University.
IIT Guwahati rejoins THE rankings
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was last featured in the 2020 edition and returns this year in the 1001-1200 band. The total number of Indian institutes that made the cut this year has increased to 75 from 56 in 2020 and 31 in 2017, making India the sixth most represented country in the rankings this year.
