JEE Advanced 2027 Might Have 3 Attempts; IIT Council Considering Attempt Limits Increase

The rules governing the eligibility criteria and attempts limits for taking the JEE Advanced test are now being reviewed by the IIT Council. The decision to review attempt limit has come after a digital petition has been signed by more than 12,000 applicants seeking reform to the current limit and allow three attempts.

Based on information from students requesting alterations to existing policies, the primary demands include:

  • Allowing candidates to take the exam three times in a span of three successive years.
  • Maintaining the current two-attempts limitation while providing candidates flexibility to make their attempts within a period of three years.

Under present criteria, candidates have a restriction of up to two appearances within two consecutive years based on when they pass their respective Class 12 exam.

Perspectives from Leadership

According to media reports, Professor Manindra Agarwal, Director of IIT Kanpur, confirmed that the Council has initiated a review process on the issue.

It needs to be understood that there is a valid rationale behind this decision, in spite of the fact that educators are cognizant of the problems faced by students due to unforeseen circumstances such as health concerns, economic constraints, or inadequate coaching - Prof Agarwal said.

Notably, according to historical trends observed thus far, merely a negligible proportion of students have achieved admission following a third attempt. According to Prof. Manindra Agarwal, one significant disadvantage associated with increasing attempt limits is that a considerable number of students could invest an additional year and finances into preparation.

Discussion remains ongoing at an early stage, and there is yet to be any official roadmap announced in terms of a timeline or conclusion. It remains under consideration whether the existing guidelines will see revisions going forward.

Revisions of rules concerning attempt limitations had been reviewed earlier as well. At the end of 2024, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) temporarily increased the attempt restriction to three before reverting it to two after considering conflicting operational limitations. Legal precedents since then by the Supreme Court were confined purely to offering relief to certain cohorts of applicants.
