JEE Advanced: Over 1,300 seats have been added across undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programmes at the newer IITs for the 2025-26 academic year, expanding opportunities for JEE Advanced aspirants.
JEE Advanced: The government has announced the addition of over 1,300 seats across undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programmes at five newer IITs: Jammu, Palakkad, Bhilai, Tirupati, and Dharwad for 2025-26 academic year. A total of 1,364 seats have been added this year alone, with IIT Bhilai contributing the most (378), followed by IIT Dharwad (343), IIT Jammu (251), IIT Tirupati (199), and IIT Palakkad (193).
IITs Seat Additions to Rise Annually Till 2028-29
Over the next four years, five third-generation IITs: IIT Bhilai, Dharwad, Jammu, Palakkad, and Tirupati are set to collectively add 6,576 seats across BTech, MTech, and PhD programmes. IIT Bhilai will see the highest increase with 1,485 additional seats, followed by IIT Dharwad with 1,473 seats. IIT Jammu will add 1,288 seats, IIT Palakkad 1,264, and IIT Tirupati 1,066. As part of this phased expansion, 1,364 seats have already been added for the 2025β26 academic year, with 1,738 more planned in 2026-27, 1,767 in 2027β28, and 1,707 in 2028-29.
Union Education Budget 2025-26
In the 2025-26 Union Education Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the addition of 6,500 seats across IITs established after 2014. Among the six IITs set up between 2015 and 2016: Palakkad, Bhilai, Jammu, Dharwad, Tirupati, and Goa. IIT Goa was excluded from the expansion plan, as it has not yet shifted to its permanent campus. Subsequently, on May 7, 2025, the Union Cabinet approved the expansion of academic and infrastructure capacity at the remaining five IITs, with a total investment of INR 11,828.79 crore over the four years from 2025-26 to 2028-29.
