JEE Main 2027: Which State Has Maximum Centres?

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is expected to release the JEE Main 2027 information bulletin with details of examination cities and other important instructions. Candidates checking the previous year’s brochure may notice that states such as Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have several cities listed for the engineering entrance examination, while Delhi appears under a single entry. However, the number of cities listed in the information bulletin should not be confused with the number of exam centres in a state. NTA publishes a state-wise list of examination cities where the test may be conducted, subject to the availability of a sufficient number of candidates. The actual number of centres can be different.

Latest: JEE Main 2027 Registration Date & Process

Last year, NTA reported 658 centres across 326 cities for JEE Main 2026 Session 1 Paper 1. In April session, the exam was held at approximately 566 centres located in 304 cities. The information brochure does not mention all the exam centres along with their details. It merely mentions the cities/districts available for the conduct the JEE Mains.

JEE Main: Which state has the maximum exam cities?

According to the previuos year's information brochure, states like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu appear the most number of times. This is because these states have a vast geographical area to cover. In contrast, Delhi only appears once. But this does not mean there is only one physical examination centre in Delhi.

The distinction is between an examination city and an examination centre. A city can have multiple examination centres, depending on the number of candidates, infrastructure and the arrangements made for the examination. The information brochure only lists the exam cities and not the centres.

Andhra Pradesh has multiple listed locations, including Anantapur, Bhimavaram, Guntur, Kakinada, Kurnool, Nellore, Tirupati, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam, among others. Tamil Nadu also has a wide range of listed cities, including Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli and Vellore.

Maharashtra is another state with several listed examination cities. Its entries include major urban centres as well as locations beyond Mumbai and Pune.

JEE Main Exam Centres 2027

While filling the JEE Mains application form, candidates can select up to four preferred cities. NTA reserves the right to allot a different examination city for administrative or logistical reasons. In cases where very few candidates select a particular city, the agency may merge examination arrangements across one or more cities.

The examination city allotted to a candidate is communicated through the city intimation slip. Later, the NTA issues an admit card providing the centre details required for appearing in the test.
