The JoSAA 2025 Round 2 cutoff (opening and closing ranks) was released today. Here's a look at how the cutoff for the most popular branch - Computer Science Engineering (CSE) - has changed in the last two years at the top five IITs after the first two important rounds of JoSAA counselling.

JoSAA 2025: IITs See Dip in Computer Science Engineering Cutoffs, IIT Bombay Remains Exception

Computer science engineering is the most sought-after course across the IITs and the NITs. The top rankers of JEE Advanced and JEE Mains opt for the Computer Science Engineering (CSE) course at the IITs and NITs. After round 2, it has come to the surface that, except for IIT Bombay, the computer science engineering cutoff has dropped across the top five IITs in the last two years.

Every year, students with the best JEE Advanced ranks choose these IITs for CSE. IIT Bombay continues to be the most popular choice, especially among the top 50 JEE Advanced rankers. Almost 90% of them chose CSE at IIT Bombay this year. Even though IIT Madras ranks highest in the NIRF rankings, many toppers still pick IIT Bombay because of its fun and lively campus life, not just academics or placements.

CSE Cutoff Trend Across Top 5 IITs after JoSAA 2025 Round 2 Counselling

  • IIT Bombay: Closing rank was 66, which is 2 ranks lower than last year and 1 rank lower than in 2023. (This means it’s slightly harder to get in this year.)
  • IIT Delhi: Closing rank went up by 9 ranks, meaning it’s slightly easier to get in this year.
  • IIT Madras: The Closing rank went up by 12 ranks.
  • IIT Kanpur: The Closing rank went up by 20 ranks.
  • IIT Kharagpur: The Closing rank went up by 36 ranks.

Except for IIT Bombay, the CSE cutoffs at the other top IITs have become less competitive this year compared to the last two years.

IIT 2023 (Closing ranks after round 2) 2024 (Closing ranks after round 2) 2025 (Closing ranks after round 2) 2024 v/s 2025
IIT Bombay 67 68 66 ⬆️ Cutoff rises by 2 ranks
IIT Delhi 118 116 125 ⬇️ Cutoff drops by 9 ranks
IIT Madras 148 159 171 ⬇️ Cutoff drops by 12 ranks
IIT Kanpur 224 250 270 ⬇️ Cutoff drops by 20 ranks
IIT Kharagpur 277 414 450 ⬇️ Cutoff drops by 36 ranks

*The above cutoffs are for the open gender-neutral category only.

JoSAA 2025 round 3 will start on July 2. This year, the JoSAA seat allotment is being done in six rounds. Round 1 and round 2 allotments have already been made.

Currently, JoSAA round 2 online reporting is ongoing, which will end on June 29. The online reporting includes submission of willingness against the allotted seat (freeze, float, slide), payment of the seat acceptance fee and completion of the document verification process.
