Students will get specialisation in topics pertaining to data science along with the necessary computational mathematics and statistical skills in the second and third year of the programme.
Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) is going to offer BTech programmes in Data Science and Engineering for the academic year 2020-21. The course is meant to be offered across the group campuses in Sikkim, Manipal, and Jaipur to tap the global demand for professional data scientists. Considering the distinctiveness of the skillset prerequisite for data science, MIT has planned the syllabus in discussion with IT industry, academia, and data science experts brought in from varied domains.
The planned B.Tech course will give emphasis to data engineering and data science from industry perspectives. This sets the course apart from other IT programmes or computer science courses. The students will be taught basic science and the standard engineering subjects in the first year by MIT. They will get specialisation in topics pertaining to data science along with the necessary computational mathematics and statistical skills in the second and third year of the programme. The students will be taught core subjects such as big data, deep learning, data analytics, and machine learning.
The model of the course will be multi-campus and help the mobility of one-semester students between any of three campuses of Sikkim, Manipal, and Jaipur. The students will study in their corresponding home campuses in the initial three semesters and will shift to another campus for a minimum of one semester in the fourth, fifth or sixth semesters.
The placement cell of the institute, alumni network, and industry collaborators will enable placement and internships as data analysts, data engineers and data scientists in core industries as well as diverse sectors such as economics, healthcare, finance, and business. Along with the core competencies, the students can opt for custom-designed programme electives in subjects such as data engineering, quantum computing, data forensics, data privacy, and security.
