MeitY Announces Launch of IGEIC: Pioneering Centre for Graphene Research and Development

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, has unveiled the India Graphene Engineering and Innovation Centre (IGEIC) as part of its Viksit Bharat@2047 vision. IGEIC, a not-for-profit Section 8 company, is dedicated to establishing a centre of excellence in graphene technology. Its mission includes advancing the commercialization of graphene for diverse applications, including electronics, energy storage, healthcare, material coating, conveyance systems, and sustainable material development.
This program aims to develop a robust graphene ecosystem in India by bringing together startups, SMEs, academia, industry, and government, including bilateral collaborations, as part of a broader global initiative. The Centre was launched by S. Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY, GoI in the august presence of Smt. Sunita Verma, Group Coordinator, MeitY, GoI, Shri Madhavan Nambiar, Chairman IGEIC, Shri Asad Pathan, Ex-Chairman, IOCL, Shri. Surendra Gotherwal, Scientist, MeitY, GoI, Prof. Alex James and Shri Kamesh Gupta, Board Member - IGEIC.
India’s leadership in graphene technology
India Graphene Engineering and Innovation Centre (IGEIC) represents India’s strategic effort to lead in the commercialization of graphene technology. It features a Research and Development centre in Trivandrum, Kerala, and a Corporate & Business Development hub in Bangalore, Karnataka. Additionally, its manufacturing unit, supported by the Government of Kerala, is located in Palakkad, Kerala, creating an integrated ecosystem for the advancement and commercialization of graphene technology.
Speaking at the launch, S. Krishnan highlighted the transformative potential of graphene and the role of IGEIC in placing India at the forefront of this global revolution. “The establishment of IGEIC under the Graphene Aurora program reflects our commitment to developing cutting-edge solutions and creating a robust industrial base for advanced materials. This centre will not only drive innovation but also create significant opportunities for startups and industry and economic growth,” said S. Krishnan.
