In the last five years, the Institute has developed and transferred emerging high-impact technologies through more than 50 licensing deals worth Rs. 28 Crore

The IIT Madras filed 417 patents in the 2024-25 financial year—298 Indian and 119 international—surpassing Director Prof. V Kamakoti’s ‘One Patent A Day’ vision. Including 39 designs, 6 copyrights, and 1 trademark, the total Intellectual Property (IP) filings stood at 463.

The institute has also signed over 50 technology licensing deals worth ₹28 crore in the past five years, transferring emerging technologies to startups, MSMEs, and MNCs, including the major 5G RAN deal with Tejas Networks.

The filing surge coincides with World Intellectual Property Day (April 26), which highlights how IP rights support innovation and economic returns.

IIT Madras has filed IPs in areas like energy, microfluidics, healthcare, robotics, and AI. It continues to lead among Indian academic institutions in patent filing and technology transfer, supported by a structured IPM Cell under the Dean (ICSR).
