Along with installing ‘Sugar and Oil Boards’, higher education institutions have been advised to conduct regular nutrition and fitness workshops

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked institutions for installation of Oil & Sugar Boards in universities and colleges. These boards will display facts about hidden fats and sugars everyday foods, empowering students to make informed and mindful choices.

The UGC letter states that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in its recent communication, has pointed out that obesity in India is a serious public health concern, closely linked to chronic diseases such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. Tackling obesity among the younger generation is vital to ensuring a healthier, more resilient future. Early intervention can significantly reduce the risk of developing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) later in life.

Talking about the benefits of consumption of nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, the letter states that these food items provide essential nutrients and promotes satiety, while processed and sugary foods contribute to weight gain with little nutritional value.

“To promote healthier dietary habits among youth, it is proposed that "Sugar and Oil Boards" be installed in Higher Education Institutions. These boards will showcase facts about hidden fats and sugars everyday foods, empowering students to make informed and mindful choices. Placing them in high visibility areas such as corridors, canteens, and meeting rooms is expected to encourage healthier eating habits and reduce diet-related diseases.

Along with installing ‘Sugar and Oil Boards’, higher education institutions have been advised to conduct regular nutrition and fitness workshops/webinars to reinforce awareness and support obesity prevention.

“While these measures will help combat non-communicable diseases (NCDs), they will also foster a healthier, more resilient youth. All Higher Education Institutions are therefore requested to implement the above suggestions in letter and spirit, actively contributing to the promotion of a stronger, healthier generation,” reads UGC notice.
