Jamia Millia Islamia Warns Against Misinformation, AISA Calls for Class Boycott
The Left-affiliated All India Students' Association (AISA) has called for a boycott of classes at JMI on Monday, alleging that the university has suspended 17 students overnight
Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has strongly condemned what it calls a "misleading and defamatory" campaign targeting the university, alleging that certain individuals and anti-social elements have been spreading fabricated messages and videos to tarnish its reputation. In an official statement, the university administration clarified that it has removed unauthorized posters featuring photos and details of suspended students from campus walls and is taking legal action against those responsible for defaming the institution.
The controversy comes amid ongoing protests following the suspension of two PhD scholars for allegedly leading an unauthorized demonstration in December 2024. The administration stated that the protests disrupted classes, blocked access to the Central Library, and led to damage to university property, including vandalizing the central canteen and breaking the gate of the security advisor's office.
JMI reaffirmed that any academic events, including conferences and seminars, require prior approval, and accused the protesting students of unlawfully gathering in the academic block without permission. While the university claimed it had offered discussions with the students, it said the protesters refused to engage. The administration has now set up a committee to investigate the public display of suspended students' photos and identify those responsible.
On the other hand, the Left-affiliated All India Students' Association (AISA) has called for a boycott of classes at JMI on Monday, alleging that the university has suspended 17 students overnight for protesting against the disciplinary action against the two PhD scholars. According to AISA, students from multiple departments, including Sociology, Social Science, Geography, Hindi, and Language Studies, have joined the boycott.
"You can suspend students, but you cannot suspend resistance," AISA said in a statement.
Meanwhile, a disciplinary committee is set to review the role of the two suspended PhD scholars on February 25, particularly regarding their involvement in organizing "Jamia Resistance Day" on December 15, 2024, an event marking the 2019 protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
JMI has urged students to stay focused on academics, warning against misinformation and emphasizing the need for a peaceful academic environment ahead of the mid-semester exams.
