Library, facility fees not needed from CNLU students during online classes: Patna HC

Patna HC has said that CNLU students need not pay for the annual library and facility fee during the period online classes were conducted due to the pandemic.

The Patna High Court has termed the annual library fee and facility fee as arbitrary during the period the Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) conducted the online classes. The court has said that the students of CNLU need not pay these fees as the classes were not conducted from the campus and hence these facilities were not used by the students.

The order will save each student in the fifth year of BA LLB (Hons) and BBA LLB (Hons) courses nearly INR 20,000 including INR 15,000 facility fee and INR 5,000 library fee is and around INR 21,000 for the second, third and fourth-year students of these courses as for them the facility fee is INR 16,000 and library fee is INR 5,000.

In the wake of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the university had earlier waived off the infrastructure development fee, student welfare fund, development charges, and electricity charges of INR 16,000 for fifth-year students and INR 17,000 for second, third and fourth-year students of both the law courses.

The court ordered this while hearing the petition filed by 29 students of CNLU against the university's order on August 7, 2020, asking students to pay the entire annual fees. The court has further ordered that the students will have to pay the rest of the annual fee as demanded by the university.
