Assam: First MBBS academic session commences at Dhubri Medical College

In August this year, National Medical Commission (NMC) approved a new medical college at Dhubri in Assam, making it the ninth such institute in the North Eastern state. The orientation day was held at Dhubri Medical College on November 16, and the classes for the first batch of 100 MBBS students commenced on November 17, 2022.

The medical oath-taking of the students was also held during the orientation program in presence of State Health Minister Keshav Mahanta, Rajya Sabha MP and the chairman of Dhubri Medical College and Hospital, Pabitra Margherita, along with top officials of the state health department and Deputy Commissioner of Dhubri, Dibakar Nath, as reported by Sentinelassam.

"It is a historic day as the classes at the medical college will start at 8 am tomorrow. The day is important not only for the health sector but also for the people of the district of Dhubri," said Keshav Mahanta during the orientation program.

"The Centre would provide 15 more seats for the students whose admission process would be completed within November 22 this year and they would be able to resume classes. I hope the batch of 100 students will pass with flying colours and serve the society and the nation," he added.

The Background

Dhubri Medical College and Hospital was virtually inaugurated by the President of India Droupadi Murmu on October 13, 2022. The outpatient services were already started on June 1, 2022, and indoor services as well as operation services by the faculties were started in July 2022.

The medical college is established under the Centrally sponsored scheme "Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district referral hospital".
