Health ministry approves 606 new pg medical seats in WB

The state has got the health ministry's approval for 606 new pg medical seats that will cover close to 20 speciality subjects, it will increase the MD/MS seats by 31%. The new seats will cover around 20 speciality subjects. The Centre has approved a total of INR 724.8 crore for these seats.
West Bengal has received approval for an additional 606 new pg medical seats across eight medical colleges. The health ministry has approved these seats which will cover around 20 speciality subjects. The state currently has 1940 post-graduation seats or MD/MS seats, the addition of 606 will increase the seats by 31%.
As per the TOI report, the Centre has approved a total of INR 724.8 crore to start the 606 new PG seats in the state. The centre will bear 60% of the cost and the state will have to provide 40%.
The eight medical colleges where the seats have been approved are -College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital, Murshidabad Medical College, Malda Medical College, Diamond Harbour Government Medical College, Deben Mahato Government Medical College, Raiganj Government Medical College and Coochbehar Government Medical College.
The seats have been approved under the scheme titled 'strengthening and upgrading of state medical colleges for starting new PG disciplines and increasing PG seats'.
"There is a dearth of doctors - both MBBS and specialist - in the state like anywhere in the country. The move to increase number of PG seats will definitely enhance the number of specialist doctors," said Pradip Mitra, former director of medical education (DME), WB government.
Diamond Harbour Medical College, Rampurhat Medical College, Deben Mahato Government Medical College, Raigunj Medical College and Cooch Behar Medical College are getting around 82 postgraduate seats each, as reported by kalimpongonlinenew.
