The National Medical Commission’s latest seat matrix reflects zero seats for the Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (HIMSR). While Jamia Hamdard awaits a legal resolution, the seat cancellation for this year is final.

In a major setback for medical aspirants, Jamia Hamdard University has withdrawn all 150 MBBS and 49 postgraduate medical seats for the academic year 2025–26. The decision comes at a time when NEET UG and NEET PG counselling is underway, leaving hundreds of candidates in uncertainty.

The National Medical Commission’s latest seat matrix reflects zero seats for the Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (HIMSR), triggering anxiety among students who had chosen the college for medical admission.

The development follows serious financial irregularities flagged in a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report, which revealed a diversion of ₹813 crore from HIMSR to the Hamdard Education Society over a period spanning 2011 to 2023. This diversion, according to official records, violated multiple regulatory norms of both the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the National Medical Commission (NMC).

In a letter dated June 6, Jamia Hamdard’s Registrar informed the NMC that the university no longer has administrative control over HIMSR’s online admissions portal due to interference by private parties. Vice-Chancellor Prof. M Afshar Alam noted that repeated efforts to bring HIMSR in line with UGC and institutional statutes had failed, leading to the university approaching the Delhi High Court to seek legal relief and enforcement of governance standards.

The withdrawal of all medical seats has deeply impacted NEET-qualified candidates who were counting on HIMSR for undergraduate and postgraduate admission. With the counselling process in full swing, the sudden removal of the institute from the seat matrix has disrupted the plans of students and parents alike, especially those who had already registered HIMSR as one of their preferences.

This episode has also reignited concerns about financial transparency and governance in private institutions deemed to be universities. Education experts have pointed out the need for greater oversight over such institutions, especially when public funds or government-aided facilities are involved.

While Jamia Hamdard awaits a legal resolution, the seat cancellation for this year is final. The case is now before the Delhi High Court, and the outcome will likely determine whether HIMSR can be reinstated in the medical admission process in the coming years.
