The undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats may increase as the state has urged NMC to expand the seat intake for medical courses amid the rising number of NEET aspirants for undergraduate and postgraduate medical admission, and to reduce the disparity between seat intake and a number of applicants.

Medical Seats in Karnataka

The Karnataka Government has requested the National Medical Commission (NMC) to increase medical seat intake for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across the country. The government has expressed concern over the gap between the number of NEET aspirants in comparison with number of available seats for medical courses.

During the graduation ceremony of Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Research Institute (SABVMC), Minister for Medical Education and Skill Development, Sharan Prakash Patil, highlighted that approximately only 20% of the total qualified students get seats in their respective medical courses yearly. This disparity requires urgent attention. He emphasised that the doctors trained in India serve not only the nation but also the global community, as reported by TimesNow.

According to Patil, a formal proposal has already been submitted to the NMC, seeking clearance for another 800 undergraduate and 600 postgraduate medical seats in Karnataka beginning this academic year. The minister reiterated the state's commitment to increasing healthcare facilities, highlighting the government's aim to construct a medical college in each district.

Dr. B.N. Gangadhara, NMC chairperson, was also present at the occasion and spoke about the global shortage of around 3 crore doctors, encouraging young people to pursue professions in medicine. He stated that Indian doctors are highly regarded around the world due to their advanced education and ability to speak English. He also stated that one of the NMC's primary missions is to train doctors who are renowned and acknowledged internationally.
