Maharashtra medical education department writes to Centre about CPS seats counselling

Even after the Centre has conducted the NEET PG 2023-24, over 3,000 aspiring medical professionals are waiting for counselling for 1,081 seats of College of Physicians and Surgions-affiliated (CPS) courses. The state medical department has written to the Centre about the gaps in the standards of institutes that offer CPS courses.

As per the TOI report, an inspection was conducted by Maharashtra Medical Council last year and severe deficiencies were found in these institutes hence the department seeks the Centre's opinion on whether counselling can be conducted for these seats.

The delay in the counselling has caused concern in the medical community as central admission to PG courses too ended around mid-Jan.

As per the state medical education Secretary Ashwini Joshi, NMC conducted inspections of some hospitals running CPS courses in January. Nearly 120 hospitals were visited, 74 refused inspection, 2 were found non-operational, and 44 hospitals were found with severe deficiencies in terms of infrastructure and faculty.

CPS president Dr Girish Maindkar said he was not informed about the inspection. "The MSR for DNB (Diplomate of National Board) and CPS institutions are different from MSR for medical colleges affiliated with universities. Teachers inspecting CPS institutes are from medical colleges and we will understand the inspection was fair if we see the report, he added.
