MBBS Admissions in Tamil Nadu Delayed as NMC Reviews 1,750 Seat Expansion Proposals

The MBBS admission process in the state of Tamil Nadu has been thrown off schedule as the National Medical Commission (NMC) is yet to clear proposals for additional seats in several colleges. MOre than 1,750 fresh seats are under review, forcing the stateโs counselling authority to put the admission schedule on hold.
MBBS Admissions pushed beyond Sept 20
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) earlier indicated that Round-2 of all India counselling could begin on August 29. However, with the seat approval process still pending, no fresh dates have been released by the state. State-level counselling, which usually follows the MCC rounds, has also been stalled this year. Officials admitted that first-year MBBS classes may now begin only after September 20, compressing the academic calendar.
Overall, Tamil Nadu has around 12,000 MBBS seats across 77 institutions, forming a crucial chunk of the national pool of 1.15 lakh seats in 766 colleges.
As per reports, at least a dozen self-financing medical colleges have sought to add 50โ150 MBBS seats each, while four deemed to be universities have applied for 100 seats each. In July, the southern state also lost 50 MBBS seats after PSP Medical College in Kanchipuram was found non-compliant with norms, reducing its intake from 150 to 100.
According to experts, the delay will hit students hardest. With the academic year pushed back, syllabus delivery will be tighter and vacation durations are likely to be cut short. This might affect final-year timelines and eligibility for postgraduate admissions as well.
Counselling authorities in Tamil Nadu have said that they are awaiting a green signal from the NMC before issuing a revised schedule. Aspirants have been advised to track updates on the MCC and TN medical selection websites for the latest information.
