According to Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare data, as many as 777 additional PG medical seats have been approved by NMC for the current academic year. Read below for more details. 

National Medical Commission has approved 777 new postgraduation medical seats after initial rejection. As per the data shared by Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total additional medical training capacity has reached 20,098 new undergraduate and PG seats for the current academic year.
Anupriya Patel, Minister of State for Health presented this data in response to questions from Rajya Sabha members Javed Ali Khan of SP and M Thambidurai from AIADMK.

10% single year increase in Medical Seats

It is a significant increase in seats that stood at 10% increase in a single year, which is huge. It is being seen as an unprecedented growth in the medical education infrastructure in India. For 2025-26, 8,416 new seats were approved for PG medical courses reflecting 11.33% growth as against 74,306 seats in 2024-25. 

Karnataka Gets Highest Number of Medical Seats

Karnataka has got new 1328 PG seats which is highest in country, followed by 1034 seats in Uttar Pradesh, and 905 seats in Tamil Nadu. For MBBS programs, a total of 11,682 seats increased which taken the total number of seats to 1,29,872. 
"All Medical Colleges/Institutions are requested to verify and confirm the number of seats displayed against their respective institutions. In case of any discrepancy, the same must be brought to the notice of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), NMC along with supporting documents within 15 days from the date of this notice on the following mail," stated NMC notification.
