SC has directed the Centre to discuss with the concerned authorities about the last-minute changes to the NEET PG SS exam syllabus and submit a response on October 4.

While hearing a plea challenging last-minute changes to the syllabus for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Post-Graduate Super Specialty (NEET SS) exam 2021, the Supreme Court of India has asked the Centre to submit a response on this matter by October 4 after discussing with the concerned authorities.

The plea was filed by 41 postgraduate doctors. As per the plea, the examination was announced on July 23, 2021, and the changes in the exam pattern were announced on August 31. In the NEET SS exam 2018, 60% of questions were from super speciality and 40% of questions were from general medicine. However, after the syllabus change announcement, this year, all the questions will be from general medicine only.

The NEET-SS 2021 exams will be held on the 13th and 14th of November 2021. The court has asked why the changes cannot be implemented from next year.

A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and DY Chandrachud questioned the Central government, National Board of Examinations (NBE) and the National Medical Commission (NMC) over the last-minute changes to the exam pattern.

The court said, β€œWhat is the NMC (National Medical Commission) doing? We're dealing with lives of doctors. You issue notice and then change the pattern? Students start preparing for super speciality courses months & months in advance. Why is the need to change the same last minutes before the exam? Why can you not proceed with the changes from the following year?”

"Don't treat these young doctors as footballs in the game of power...We can't put these doctors at the mercy of insensitive bureaucrats...Put your house in order...Just because somebody has the power, you can't yield the power in any manner. This is so important for their career. Now you cannot introduce changes last minute. These young doctors might be put at ruse due to last minute changes…Please deal with young doctors with sensitivity," said Justice Chandrachud.
