UG and PG medical seats in India are expected to increase by 8000 this academic year and an assessment of medical colleges is underway.

UG PG Medical Seats

UG PG Medical Seats Likely to Increase: The National Medical Commission (NMC) is likely to increase the undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats in India by a cumulative 8000 seats from the academic session 2025. NMC Chief Abhijat Sheth has notified about the cumulative increase of medical seats in India for UG and PG seats from this academic year. Further, the chief also mentioned that an assessment of the medical colleges is underway.

There were concerns that the number of medical seats may drop in session 2025 after the CBI exposed a network in July involving officials from the Union Health Ministry, the National Medical Commission (NMC), middlemen, and private medical college representatives for unethical practices of medical education and academics in India. They were allegedly involved in corruption and illegal manipulation of rules for medical colleges.

Dr. Sheth further mentioned that along with his appointment, the president of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) has also been appointed. He added that completing the inspection of UG and PG medical seats in India is a top priority and that the assessment process is currently underway, as reported by Hindustan Times.
