According to NIOS chairman, youngsters’ increased interest in competitive exams is one of the reasons behind the increased registrations.

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is witnessing a steady rise in the registrations for their class X and XII certifications. According to the official source, around 78,901 candidates registered for class X exams in October – November 2017 and this number increased to 1,18,805 in 2018. Similarly, class XII registrations have been increased from 1, 03,489 (2017) to 1, 90,000 (2019).

According to the chairman of NIOS, CB Sharma, formal schooling is getting tougher and as an alternative, many parents are choosing homeschooling over formal schooling for their children. At NIOS, there is flexibility in the schedules of learning and this is why the registrations are increasing. He also added that the board exams are conducted twice a year and students are given a maximum of nine attempts to clear the exam and receive certification.

He further elaborated saying that the students are registering more for the April-May examination as compared to the October-November examination as most Indian varsities follow the April-May examination with the yearly admission process. He also added that youngsters’ increased interest in competitive exams could also be the reason behind the increased registration as the basic eligibility criteria to appear in most of such exams is to have class XII certification.

As per the data shared by the chairman, the passing rate keeps on fluctuating. Almost 32.33% of students got class X certification in 2017 that increased to 41.6% in 2019. However, the pass percentage of class XII decreased to 3278% in 2019 from 36.37% in 2017.

Sharma says that the students get multiple attempts to pass the examination and get certification this is why yearly pass percentage is not a parameter to judge students' overall performance.
