
As many as 230 resident doctors of government hospitals and 60 employees of Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) in Mumbai have tested positive for coronavirus.
Maharashtra has reported 26,538 new COVID-19 cases, and the Omicron tally has increased to 797. In Mumbai, among the infected are 230 resident doctors and 60 employees of Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST).
As per Ganesh Solunke, president of the JJ Hospital chapter of the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), nearly 73 resident doctors of the JJ Hospital are found to be Covid-19 positive, as reported by Times Now News.
Apart from JJ Hospital, King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital has also reported that 60 of its resident doctors are coronavirus positive. In Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital and R N Cooper Hospital around 80 and 7 resident doctors have tested positive respectively. All three hospitals are run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Eight resident doctors of civic-run Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Thane city also found positive.
On Thursday, Maharashtra had reported 20,181 new cases, of which 85% are asymptomatic while 1,170 required hospitalisation. The state health department has directed the BMC officials to ramp up Covid-19 testing.
WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said on the Omicron variant of Covid-19 that it is killing people and should not be dismissed as mild, as reported by NDTV.
"While Omicron does appear to be less severe compared to Delta, especially in those vaccinated, it does not mean it should be categorised as mild. Just like previous variants, Omicron is hospitalising people and it is killing people. In fact, the tsunami of cases is so huge and quick, that it is overwhelming health systems around the world," added Tedros.
