TET Updates: Demand for Reduced Pass Marks, TN Govt to hold Six TETs in Two Years as per SC Mandate

TET Updates: The Tamil Nadu school education department is expected to hold at least six Teacher Eligibility Tests (TET) over the next two years. The decision comes after the Supreme Court reaffirmed that passing TET is mandatory for all and in-service teachers to continue in service, with exemptions only for those having less than five years of service left. As per the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the states must conduct at least one TET annually. However, Tamil Nadu has conducted only six regular TETs and one special TET in the past 12 years.
Teachers’ Demand for Lower Pass Marks
The TET is conducted for 150 marks, and candidates must score 60% (90 marks) to qualify for the exam. A 5% relaxation is given to candidates belonging to the reserved categories. As per some media reports, the teachers’ unions in Tamil Nadu have urged the government to reduce the qualifying mark from 90 to just 20. At present, candidates from the general category must score 90 marks, while those from the PwD, MBC, and SC categories require at least 82 marks.
TET Mandatory for All Teachers
Earlier, the Madras High Court held that passing TET is mandatory for promotion to the post of teacher, though not compulsory for those who joined before July 29, 2011. The court has allowed a window of two years for existing teachers to appear and clear TET. However, this ruling was challenged in the Supreme Court by teachers’ unions and the Tamil Nadu government. Minority institutions have also petitioned in the apex court, reasoning that TET should not apply to them.
